I some how went years without someone hitting my car in a parking lot. It must have been pure luck because recently the wife and I did some counting , and over the past 5 years between 3 cars, we’ve been hit or decently scratched while parked 14  times. People are garage drivers.

You have to understand that there are people who are just fucking clueless. They really have no skill or sense of car position or maneuvering except possibly when they are going straight.

My wife is one of these people. Fortunately she doesn’t read this site or know my screen name, but she knows that I think little of her driving abilities. When backing out of the garage or a parking spot, she can’t help but start cranking on the wheel. (She’s hit the edge of the garage opening doing this, but it doesn’t stop her.) I’ve screamed at her to stop turning. Just fucking back up straight or until the front wheel has cleared the obstacle. She also has no clear sense for the position of the front wheels. If the steering wheel is 1 turn right or left, it will flummox her as often as not to which way to turn it to straighten up the car when backing. Her lane sense is shit too. I was having to let her drive me home from the ER just last night and she wanders aimlessly across the center line and speeds into dangerous situations without a clue. I suspect it gets worse at night because she does seem able to get to work and back (and into and out of a garage) without incident. I cannot ride with her and when I do (like last night), I just hold my tongue and play along with all the awful driving habits she’s developed.

She only learned to drive when she was in her 20s, so I’ll give her that as a partial excuse. I dread the day when I’m old and she has to drive me places. Hopefully the self driving car will be a reality by then.
